Transportation Guidance

Organizations that provide guidance to finding local transportation

The Web sites listed below will assist you in finding transit agencies and providers of community transportation in your area.

The Eldercare Locator is dedicated to connecting families to local resources that enable older adults to live independently in their communities. Area Agencies on Aging (AAAs), Aging and Disability Resource Centers (ADRCs), and Indian Tribal Organizations can provide information about transportation options specific to local communities. Older adults and their caregivers can call the Eldercare Locator at 800-677-1116 or visit their Web site at http://www.eldercare.gov/ to identify these resources in their area.

2-1-1 provides callers with information about and referrals to human services for every day needs and in times of crisis. 2-1-1 is an easy to remember telephone number that, where available, connects people with important community services and volunteer opportunities. The implementation of 2-1-1 is being spearheaded by United Way and comprehensive and specialized information and referral agencies in states and local communities. If you are looking for transportation options in a specific local area, try 2-1-1 to learn about the services options in that area.

The American Public Transportation Association (APTA) provides an online listing of state and local providers of public transportation and related organizations, such as coordinating agencies. (http://www.apta.com/links/state_local/)

AARP Bulletin Online has compiled a state-by-state list of local transportation options to help you quickly access transportation in your community. (http://www.aarp.org/bulletin/yourlife/state_by_state_transportation.html)

Independent Transportation Network -- ITNAmerica -- is a membership organization providing transportation to adults 65 and older through its network of programs, which uses volunteer drivers, throughout the United States of America. (http://www.itnamerica.org/ )
