Higher Energy Prices Disproportionately Affect Older Americans

The NCST is finding that many transportation and human service agencies are reporting increased concerns for the future of services for older adults, especially programs that directly and indirectly rely on transportation. Agencies that serve older adults are cutting services in response to the current economic conditions, even while demand for these services is rising. Transportation, meal delivery, home health aid, and volunteer programs are the hardest hit.

New Funding Opportunity from the AoA

The U.S. Assistant Secretary for Aging Josefina G. Carbonell announced the availability of $13 million to support state efforts to help individuals with long-term care needs to avoid unnecessary nursing home placement. The deadline for submission of letter of intent is July 18. An open information teleconference for applicants of this solicitation will be held July 10 at 2:00 p.m., EST. NCST Participates in the n4a Annual Conference

The NCST will participate in transportation focused sessions and exhibit materials at the n4a 33rd annual conference in Nashville, TN on July 20-23, 2008. There will be several sessions focused on transportation related issues for older adults, the American Indian Senior Mobility Advisory Group will hold its kick-off meeting, and n4a will host a focus group on senior transportation policies and programs during this annual conference.

Applications open for CTAA’s Institute for Transportation Coordination

The 2008 CTAA Institute for Transportation Coordination will be held Monday, November 17 to Thursday, November 20, 2008 at the Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center in the Washington, D.C. area.
